Following the success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which has now surpassed five million copies sold, developer Sandfall Interactive is rewarding fans with a major free update currently in development.
The studio confirmed that the update is being built for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, though no release window has been shared yet. Creative Director Guillaume Broche described the update as a gesture of gratitude toward the growing fanbase:
“We hope the update we’re working on will act as a ‘thank you’ to those fans for their support – please be patient while our team work hard on bringing you something worth the wait.”
What’s Included in the Update
Sandfall revealed several details about what players can expect:
A new playable area, sending players to a completely fresh setting filled with dangerous encounters and hidden discoveries.
Additional late-game bosses, designed to test even the most skilled players.
Fresh outfits for every member of the Expedition, giving fans more ways to personalize their party.
Broader localization support, adding Czech, Ukrainian, Latin American Spanish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Thai, and Indonesian bringing the total number of supported languages to 19.
Plus, extra content still under wraps, promising more surprises down the line.
A Glimpse Into the Story
Sandfall also shared a single teaser image that might hint at where the story is headed. It shows a child’s playroom with a drawing of Verso riding Esquie, sparking speculation that the new content could explore Verso’s early life and her connection with Esquie.
Players who’ve reached Act 3 or completed the game will immediately recognize the significance of this clue. If true, the update could expand on one of the most emotional storylines in Expedition 33.
Building the Clair Obscur Universe
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 launched to critical acclaim, earning a 9/10 review from IGN, which praised its artistic direction, heartfelt writing, and dynamic turn-based combat system.
And according to Broche, this isn’t the end of the journey — Clair Obscur is the name of an ongoing franchise, meaning Expedition 33 is just the first chapter in a much larger world Sandfall plans to develop further.
